What separates good touch controls from bad ones
Touch controls are the make-or-break of mobile gaming, and yet so many games get them wrong. After enough reviews you start to notice the patterns.
Responsiveness comes first. If there's a delay between your swipe and the game reacting, nothing else matters. The best games register input the instant your finger moves, even if it costs a little visual flourish.
Placement is next. On-screen buttons should sit where your thumbs naturally rest, and good games let you move them. A jump button that's a centimeter too high will ruin an otherwise great platformer.
Then there's feedback. A subtle vibration or a clear animation tells you the input landed. Without it you second-guess yourself, and in a fast game that hesitation is fatal.
When we praise a game's controls, this is the checklist behind it. When we complain, it's usually because one of these was ignored.
